We sat down with our new Marketing Manager, Tom Beckerle, to learn a bit about how he came to be in his new position at jWeb Media.
Up Next: The History of Valentine’s Day
After about a month here, he has had some adjusting to do. We figured it was time to introduce him to the world now that he is here for good!
Tell Us About Yourself
“I’m 40 years old and I have lived in St. Peter’s my entire life, literally down the street, I haven’t gone anywhere.”
After attending Francis Howell High School and graduating from St. Charles Community College, Tom decided to stay where he grew up. While he hasn’t been outside of the United States, Tom has gotten the chance to travel to places around the country like Manhattan, the Hamptons, Vegas, Pensacola, Seattle, and Denver. He has even gotten to see the Amazon Headquarters and really enjoyed that trip.
When asked about his family, Tom told us, “I have a grandbaby who will be two in August, a 21-year-old son and two brothers- one with cerebral palsy.” His mother is 74 and his dad passed away when I was 24.
What Got You into Marketing?
When Tom was 18, he got his first computer. It was a desktop and he downloaded America online, a chatting platform. “It was the neatest thing ever because you could chat to people on the internet.” His love for marketing continued to develop as he got into other chatrooms, blogs and then WordPress sites. “I’ve been doing marketing in one way or another since 2000.”
What Jobs Did You Hold Before jWeb?
Tom started his work career at the local McDonald’s in St. Charles and even worked down the street from jWeb, at the local TGI Fridays. Most recently, Tom sold internet marketing for the Yellow Pages. It was his job to sell digital and Google ads. He also owned a roofing company for a bit.
What Are You Looking Forward to In Your Time At jWeb?
“Growing the digital marketing arm of jWeb is like my baby and that’s what I want to do. There are so many digital marketing companies right now, and every time one of them would call me last year, they would have the same pitch asking ‘Do you want to be on the front page of Google?’, I mean of course companies do.” What Tom wants to do is to give customers value and get more customers in order to grow jWeb as a digital marketing powerhouse.
What’s Your Favorite Part About the Work You Do?
“My favorite part, honestly, is the winning. When you get the conversion it’s like a dopamine hit, like when you see an ad gets a phone call or an email form gets filled out.” He is truly excited about what he does and wants to continue to put customers in front of businesses, like jWeb, that need their services at a fair price.
Any Advice for Those Wanting to Be in Your Position?
“Study, study, study. You can never have too much info. The more you learn about it, the more you can make informed decisions. I used to think testing was everything, but it’s terrible and you waste too much money. If you know that you have a plan going in, it just goes so much better than going in blinding trying to do it for yourself. Learning stuff like FB Blueprint & Google Ads and just understanding how the platforms work will save you so much time and get you better results quicker for your clients.”
You can never be overeducated, that’s for sure!
